This is Governor Roger Wilson and Governor Bob Holden. Two democratic governors who have served previously. Governor Wilson only was governor for about 3 or 4 months, after Governor Carnahan died.

This was a man selling his wares at the Governor's swearing in. They were mostly Obama buttons though. I wonder if he was at the wrong inaugural? Today Barak Obama becomes the president of the United States of America. Hope is alive.

Bands

There were lots of high school kids at the swearing in. There were many bands who played in the inaugural parade. I believe between high school kids and state employees you had almost the whole crowd covered.

The Security

There was really not tons of security at the swearing in ceremony that was obvious. There were uniformed officers and highway patrol everywhere, but there were no checks, no metal detectors and even a "potluck". Missouri really is a little bit country. I did however, spot these guys on the top of the capitol, so I am sure everything was being watched.

Before the Governor's swearing in, the other statewide office holders were sworn in. I was on the wrong side for getting their faces though. This is attorney general Chris Koster. Below is a better picture of him with his neice who held the bible for his swearing in.

I think it is important that children see and be a part of the democratic process. This little girl was waving her flags throughout the swearing ins with her sister. That is until she got poked in the eye.

One of the reasons, there were several, that I have been absent was the lack of things to shoot in Jefferson City. However, every four years, Jefferson City has a big party, the Inaugural. So I have a new stock of pictures and will be featuring them over the next couple of weeks.

Jefferson City has an Amtrak station. Currently there is a contest underway to rename the different trains that travel through Jefferson City. One goes west to Kansas City and the other east to St. Louis.

The Penguin and Puffin Coast at the St. Louis Zoo is one of the best exhibits they have. You can get up close and personal with the penguins. You can watch them swim and eat. If you are ever in St. Louis I recommend this highly.

Jefferson City does not have a zoo. But just two short hours away from here, is one of the best zoos, the St. Louis Zoo. We visit at least a couple of times a year. Last weekend was one of our visits. It was a beautiful November day, in the 70s. It is now typcial November and has turned much colder. I will be using zoo pictures all week on the blog.

Here is Minnesota's capitol in St. Paul. I lived in the twin cities for a few years in the early 90s. I think this was my first capitol I fell in love with.

I am using one of my shots from my trip for daily photo monthly theme day. I know it is a little cheating, but really rules are made to be broken right? Here is my entry for lines. It was taken in Madison Wisconsin, which I would not mind someday being my home. I fell in love with this city, with one short visit. If only it did not get so cold there, I would already be packing my bags.

Good Art Causes Discussion?

It appears that part of art inside the prison this year was to actually paint on the walls of the old prison with permanent paint. They had been granted permission by the Office of Administration which is the owner of the property as the state of Missouri, however, they failed to consult with the prison redevelopment committee. And now it will cost a lot of money to restore these walls to the original condition. I am of course in support of the arts, as I do love my photography. However, I am not sure arts is the best place to be spending public money. Of course, only my opinion. And here is an opinion piece on the controversy.

Art in the Park 2008 was on the grounds of the old prison. Everyone thought it was a little strange since it was not exactly a park. You will have to come back tomorrow to find out why it was a very bad idea.

Here I thought I had pretty much covered the capitol from every angle, but whenever I think that, I see something new. This relief is on the ceiling of the over hang above the doors behind the Jefferson statute. You can see the position in this picture here. The big doors are behind the columns at the top of the steps.

Tour of Missouri starts today. There are signs of it all over town, such as this sign in the drug store window. Jefferson City is the finish line for stage 5 on Friday. Hopefully I can get some shots, although, it depends on what time they get in as I do have plans for Friday night.
