In the park we go to most frequently, the benches have been donated by families in honor of someone. I think it is a nice way to remember someone. Is it that way in your town?
I've seen that in Boston in the past but most recently it seems towns have been selling "bricks" instead of benches. They can sell a lot more bricks than benches and make more money. Benches are a much nicer way to honor someone though.

Yes, we have the same thing in Guelph all over the city--at bus stops and on street corners and there's a plaque on them.
