Chugging Along

This is my 200th post for Jefferson City Daily Photos. I am just chugging along and hopefully will have another 200 and then another 200. Ok, so I am not sure that there is that much to see in this city, but I keep trying to come up with new and interesting things.

Weeping Cherry

This is a weeping cherry tree in front of the Broadway State Office building. It is a beautiful tree.

State Health Lab

This is a new building that has been built as part of the Central East Side Neighborhood Plan. It is the Missouri State Health Lab. Click the link to read more about the lab and exactly what they do.

International Shoe

This is the old International Shoe Factory. There is a famous Supreme Court case concerning International Shoe in the world of personal jurisdiction that you read about in Civil Procedure in law school. International Shoe was (is?) a Missouri company. I never knew they existed before law school.

Phone Booth

You don't see phone booths anymore. This one actually does not have a phone inside of it. I guess with cell phones, no one really needs phone booths anymore. This one seems to be in an off place, but it is across the street from the old prison.

Prison Bust

This is the bust on front of the prison from yesterday's post. It is a bust of Alexander Monroe Dockery, governor of Missouri from 1901-1905, when this building was built.

Missouri State Penitentiary

They are restoring the old correctional center, as it is no longer being used as a prison. It really is a beautiful building, considering what it was built to do, house prisoners. I believe they are making it a museum. It is all part of the Central East Side Neighborhood Plan. At one time it was the oldest operating prison west of the Mississippi. It opened in 1836 and closed in 2004.

Parking Meters

Many of the parking meters in town are two hour limit, especially by the capitol area. Of course a ticket is only $5 if you go over.

Not the official statebird...

The official state bird is the bluebird. However, having lived in the St. Louis area and growing up a St. Louis Cardinal fan, the cardinal is the unofficial state bird.

Watching the trains go by...

Since I saw no boats moving the day I shot this, I assume these boys were watching the trains from the overlook on the capitol.

Capitol Details

These lights are on an unsed entrance to the Capitol. I have photographed the capitol a lot, yet the other day was the first time I was on the east side and saw these.

Zesto

Zesto is a small ice cream and food walk-up type restaurant. It is much like old ice cream walk ups. It serves very good hot dogs, as well as many other dishes. What has been a Jefferson City mainstay has new owners. From the look of the parking lot on the early Spring day this picture was taken, they are still getting the business.

State tree

On June 20, 1955, the flowering dogwood (Cornus Florida L.) became Missouri's official tree. The tree is small in size, rarely growing over 40 feet in height or 18 inches in diameter. The dogwood sprouts tiny greenish-yellow flowers in clusters, with each flower surrounded by four white petals. The paried, oval leaves are olive green above and covered with silvery hairs underneath. In the fall, the upper part of the leaves turns scarlet or orange and bright red fruits grow on the tree.

Spring has Sprung

I am so happy that it is finally getting around to looking like Spring around here. I have the first sunburn of the season and their are flowers blooming everywhere. This is a tree that is around the capitol area. I have always referred to them as Magnolias, but have no idea if that is correct or not.

Don't forget to Vote

Today is an election in our state for local issues. We have school board, city board and the Casino issue. They are wanting to amend our city laws to allow Riverboat Gambling. Of course so far no casino has shown an interest in coming to Jeff City, so I am not sure it really matters. I figure let it come. It will be something new to photograph.

Credit Union or Bank?

It seems like Credit Unions really have gotten big in the last decade or so. I guess I really never pay attention to the major advantages or disadvantages, just which is in the better locations for me.

Boonville Road

There is a stretch of road in Jefferson City, Boonville Road, where there are very nice houses that are on a bluff that overlook the fields and river. This is a picture of my favorite house on that road.

Colleges

While Jefferson City only has one official University, Lincoln, they have campuses of a few other schools, which mainly do evening classes. William Woods University's main campus is in Fulton, MO. Columbia College is of course in Columbia, Missouri.
