Police on Bikes

We have a few of our police force who ride bikes in the summer time. I am sure this year with the cost of gas, the city is probably glad they have them.

Folk Lore

From stories told, I cannot find actual confirmation of it, this creek was actually a trench from the Civil War which has now filled in with water and is a nice place to skip rocks.

Scholastic

Above, we have Clifford the big red dog, from Scholastic. Scholastic is a children's publishing company. They have been in Jefferson City since 1968. They have their national distribution center and the home of their National Service Organization. For a little history of the company click here. They are best known for their book fairs in schools and their book clubs and flyers that are distributed through schools. Well, that and they are the US publisher for Harry Potter books. Since they do have such a big presence in Jefferson City, you see Clifford and Scholastic everywhere. At all public functions it seems that Clifford is there. My daughter use to have a Clifford playroom. It is now being converted into a princess bedroom. However, she still loves Clifford. But, this man or woman in this suit, scares her everytime. She is getting to the age now however, that she loves that when she sees Clifford, it means a free book. Scholastic hands out books at all the major festivals and activities for kids. You can tell it at our garage sales too. You can find Scholastic books at almost all sales. I am glad that they do so well in spreading the love of reading to kids.

Petting Zoo

Jefferson City has no zoo. So when there are animals and the kids can see and pet them, it is a big deal. I am sure these animals all felt like humans do after going to a buffet. By noon, when we left, none of them were really interested in eating anymore.

News Reporter

Even more popular than the fire truck was the "be a newscaster." I guess for kids it is all about being on TV. Maybe it is for adults too. ;) This picture is of the weekend anchor, Ladd Egan. My daughter was not interested in doing this one. I guess she has been inside the station enough since her dad works there, that it just is not that big of a deal to her.

Face Painting

It is amazing how at this age the little things in life make you so happy. The bottom picture was taken when we could not find a mirror to show her how she looked. Thank goodness for digital cameras. Today is my daughter's birthday. Happy Birthday butterfly.

Fire Trucks

Fire trucks always appeal to kids. There was a line to sit up and see inside the truck. My daughter, even though she has been in one at her school, wanted to wait and see inside this one too.

Bounce House

Kids just love these things. We had to wait in line for a few minutes in the bounce house. But it seemed to be all worth it to her.

KidsFest

An annual event in Jefferson City is Kidsfest. It is always held on the second Saturday in June. It is a event at the Washington Park Ice Arena, sponsered by the local television station, KRCG. The entire day is aimed at kids. There was a petting zoo, a bounce house, face painting, dance and martial arts demonstrations, as well as games, a fire truck and ice cream. And all for free. It is a big event for the families that have children. This picture is of one of the exhibtors, the MOST accounts to save for your child's college. I will have more pictures the next few days of the fun.

Carnahan Memoral Garden

The Governor's garden was officially renamed the Carnahan Memorial Garden in October 2001. Mel Carnahan was governor of Missouri when I began working for the state. He was running for a senate seat against John Ashcroft in 2000, when he was killed in a plane crash. It was very strange to be in this town during the time of his state funeral, which was attended by the president and vice president. The garden was named in his honor. However, most people in town still just call it the Governor's Garden, as it sits below the mansion.

* also note that even though he was deceased, Governor Carnahan beat John Ashcroft in that election, and his wife Jean Carnahan was appointed to take the seat. John Ashcroft of course went on to be Attorney General under President Bush.

Mansion Construction

Our First Lady of Missouri has campaigned hard this year to get repairs done on the Governor's mansion. It appears that the work has begun.

Lewis and Clark wrap up

The new monument with Lewis and Clark is all the talk here in Jefferson City. It is not everyday that there is a new statue around here. In fact the newspaper is saying it has been 80 years. When we went to take pictures of the statue unveiled yesterday, there were a lot of tourists there. Living and working in this city daily, you tend to forget how touristy it really is.

In their Bronze Glory

Here is the statue as it is now. No more white bags over their heads. And since these people paid a lot of money to get their name on this bronze plaque, I thought the least I could do it give them credit on the blog too. To read them, click on the picture for an enlarged view. I knew the corporations of course, but could not help but google some of the names to see who they were. At the presidents level there is Allen and Josephine Green, Fred Heinkel, and Audrey J. Walton is from the Wal-mart Waltons.

Waterfalls vs Fountains

In other areas in town we have fountains. For this new memorial, it appears that natural waterfalls were the way to go. This is the larger of the two below the monument. The one below is right under the statues' feet. Tomorrow I will have the pictures of the actual statue.

New Picture Spot

Another aspect of the new Lewis and Clark Trailhead Plaza is a place to take pictures. This spot here I think will become very popular with local photographers. It is across the street from the Carnahan Memorial Garden (Governors' Garden) which has always been a popular place. In fact when I was there shooting these shots, someone took my idea and was doing a family portrait in the spot.

Lewis and Clark Trailhead Plaza

The Lewis and Clark Trailhead Plaza is the newest addition to Jefferson City's Greenway. This area is a linear park which is meant for bikers (the non-motorized kind) and walkers to enjoy the city without having to be on the city streets. This area is where the monument from yesterday is featured. It is a nice new area located between the capitol and the Governor's mansion on Capitol Ave. These are the bike racks that have been installed.

Corps of Discovery

Today at 5:30 the new Lewis and Clark monument is going to be unveiled. Although that is scheduled for the Capitol Rotunda. 300 people or so are expected to attend. So since they cannot overnight get them on their slabs, this is the way they are today. I find the image odd, but whimisical in a way. I am glad I drove drive today to take some shots. The sculpter is Sabra Tull Meyer, from Columbia, MO. Here is a smaller version of the statue from her site. And here you can see some pictures of the full versions before they came to the park. I really like how they are set on the stones, rather than your typical marble bases. I also like the capitol in the background. There were quite a few features of this new monument area I will be sharing over the next couple of days, including, a picture of the monument after the bags are removed.

More Central Dairy

Central Dairy ice cream is the best you can find around here. It is amazingly good and very well priced. This picture is the first taste of ice cream at the ice cream counter that my daughter had. It ranks up there with first haircut and first tooth. Many people when they visit Jefferson City, add a trip to Central Dairy to the list of things to do and see. The day we went, it was the track and field finals and packed. But no one was complaining.

Monthly Theme Day: Corner Store

I had a hard time deciding what to use as a corner store. In Jefferson City, there is not much of a corner store left here. They have all been taken over by chains. This is one of the last local gems we have left. It is the Central Dairy store. Central Dairy is the local dairy which manufactures ice cream and milk. Until recently, they did morning deliveries of milk. Last year they were bought out by a bigger dairy in the Midwest, Prairie Farms. Many people were afraid that the local ice cream counter would go. So far, so good. It remains. And it is as popular as ever.
Check back tomorrow for more pictures of Central Dairy.
